Blue screen (BSOD): what it means and what to do
The blue screen is Windows stopping itself before damage happens. Once is no big deal. If it keeps coming back, you need to find out why.
- Take a photo of the blue screen with your phone. The stop code (like CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED) is the most important clue.
- If it happened only once, restart and keep working. Watch whether it comes back.
- Think about what changed recently: new software, an update, or a device you plugged in. Unplug external devices and try again.
- Install all Windows updates and driver updates.
- If it crashes right at startup, boot into Safe Mode: hold Shift while choosing Restart.
- Type the error code into our chat and we'll help you understand it.
MacMacs don't blue-screen. The equivalent is a sudden restart with a "your computer restarted because of a problem" message. If it repeats, update macOS and start in Safe Mode (hold Shift at startup).
Important: If the blue screen returns daily or the computer won't start at all, back up your files as soon as you can. It can point to failing memory or a failing disk.
